Description
Following revolutions against British rule in North America and Spanish rule in South America, there were several attempts to create large, regional unions which could challenge the power of the Old World states. The North American States joined together in a loose confederation. In the South, revolutionary leader Simón Bolívar founded a federal republic known as Gran Colombia.
In our timeline, the weak government of the North, based on the Articles of Confederation, was replaced with a much stronger federal government, based on the current Constitution of the United States. In South America, internal strife between the competing states led to the breakup of Gran Colombia.
In this timeline, positions have been reversed. The North American States continued to follow the Articles of Confederation, but with no strong political centre, the alliance eventually collapsed, leaving a collection of competing states. Weak and vulnerable to Anglo-Canadian influence, the original 13 states have coalesced into five medium sized powers. None of them have the size or population to challenge the great North American powers such as French Louisiana, Texas or the Mexican Empire.
In the South, the competing states were able to agree a long term, federal settlement. The United States of Columbia, as the nation became known, went on to become the largest power in the New World. Originally comprised of the successor states to the Spanish viceroyalty of New Granada (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador), the union now counts Peru, Upper Peru (Bolivia) and Argentina among its 36 states. The Republic has a poor relationship with its regional rival, the Empire of Brazil. Chile, the only former Spanish colony not to join with the United States of Columbia, holds the balance of power, uneasily attempts to ensure neither of its two neighbours become powerful enough to dominate the entire region and end Chile's fragile independence.
With no United States of America and thus no war of 1812, American Civil War or Spanish-American War, the history of the New World has taken a very different path.
