Variant Flag of Azerbaijan

Description

This flag is part of a project I came up with to explore what makes a national flag or symbol.  I wanted to suggest what might occur if real nations wanted to design new flags from scratch, without using current or historical flags. It’s unlikely most nations would want to change their flags, but it’s fun to speculate on a “what if”?

The flame symbol at the top left comes from Azerbaijan’s real life coat of arms. Azerbaijan is sometimes known as the land of eternal fire, due to large deposits of oil and natural gas, some of which are found so close to the surface they form natual ‘everlasting fires’, some of which have been burning since antiquity.  One of the most famous is located at Yanar Dag, which literally translates to "burning mountain".  The ancient religion of Zoroastrianism once flourished in this region before the rise of Islam.  Zoroastrians revere fire and their sacred spaces are known as fire temples.  They may have once worshipped at the natural eternal fires in Azerbaijan. Red and white are the colours traditionally associated with Zoroastrians.

Notes

While Zoroastrianism was once popular in Persia and Central Asia, most modern Zoroastrians live in India and the United States.

I’m not an expert in Zoroastrianism, so I’ve made extensive use of internet research when designing this flag, chiefly Wikipedia.  My apologies if there are any mistakes.
